How do you know when you officially have spring fever? When you walk to 7–11 at 11:30 to buy a videotape, so that you can tape the first spring training game on TV, like I just did…

Welcome to the first post here at Conor’s Baseball Blog! I wanted to start this ‘blog off with a bang, but since I’m going to be the only one reading it for the first few weeks, I’ll simply start it with something that caught my eye tonight. I was reading an article on the Mariners’ official web site about Felix Hernandez, and the impressive spring that he is having thus far. There was a similar article on the Seattle PI’s page, so I read that too. Here is what caught my eye:

In the article on the M’s page, Jim Street quotes M’s manager, Mike Hargrove, as saying:

“Very rarely do I sit in a bullpen and watch someone throw, but it is fun to watch this kid. It's easy to like a 98 mile-per-hour fastball, but he has good action on his changeup. He throws strikes and keeps it down.”

However, John Hickey over at the PI quotes Hargrove as saying:

You can't crown him as the next Cy Young, but he is electric. He has a nice, easy motion. It's easy to like a 98-mph fastball, but then you look at his changeup. Very rarely do I sit in the bullpen to watch a pitcher throw, but it's fun to watch this kid throw.”

The quotes are similar enough that I imagine both Street and Hickey were among a group of reporters interviewing Hargrove. Either that, or, with 13 years of managerial experience, “The Human Rain Delay” has become a master of spitting out similar quotes to various reporters throughout the day. If the latter is the case, then this isn’t an issue at all. However, if both Street and Hickey were listening to Hargrove at the same time, what did he really say? Not that it’s a really big deal; I’m sure most people won’t even notice, but as a journalism student, it caught my attention.

Anyway, I have a lot of interesting stuff lined up for this site, so stay tuned!
