Pitching won't come cheaply this winter. Between Matsuzaka's steep price tag, which could make him cost more than $15 million per season (with the posting fee factored in), to potential landmines in Schmidt and Zito, there's going to be a lot of money thrown at pitching in the next few months. Hell, Jamie Moyer just got a  two-year, $10.5 million extension! Smart teams (especially those with many rotation spots to fill, like the Mariners) will need to take advantage of a bargain or two. Here's one...

                K/G      BB/G      GB%
Pitcher A:   3.5       2.4      59.50%
Pitcher B:  3.3       2.2       62.80%

Pitcher A is Jason Johnson, a guy that pitched for three teams this season and can't demand much with his 6.10 ERA. On the other hand, pitcher B is Chien-Ming Wang, who posted similar rates and will be getting Cy Young votes...

I know this isn't new - the Jason-Johnson-should-be-a-Mariner bandwagon started a while ago. But, I don't want it to lose momentum. The more groundballs we can feed to Beltre, Betancourt and Lopez - the better!

I think Chien-Ming Wang is closer to being Jason Johnson than Jason Johnson is to being Chien-Ming Wang :P

Maybe worth a shot, though.

Yeah, you're probably right - I think there's a slim chance Wang repeats his '06 numbers. But, Johnson is just as underrated as Wang is overrated and I'll happily settle for something in between for the M's 4th or 5th SP next year...
